bike your boat urban adventure documentary video graphics designed by shelli

PROJECT: Bike Your Boat carbon-free urban adventure documentary video
CLIENTS: Elli Morris stills & motion, Jack Martin
OBJECTIVES: Promote ways of thinking outside the box to get outdoors, save money, and have our passions and hobbies be more ecologically sustainable
MY ROLES: Design all graphical elements, animate elements as applicable
TOOLS: Adobe CC – Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, and Media Encoder
ADDITIONAL CREDITS: Videography, Elli Morris stills & motion

“Did you just pull up on a folding bike with a pack raft?”
“Yeah, man, why not?”

It might be wildness technology but Jack Martin uses it right at home on his urban adventures in Richmond, Virginia. This immersive documentary takes us along for the ride as Jack bikes his boat to the river, boats his bike through the class four rapids running right through the heart of downtown RVA, and then bikes his boat back home.

These light, lively static and animated graphics illustrate key components of carbon-free urban adventure living and visually reinforce key environmental, budget and health benefits of sustainable living.

Ever passionate about the James River—and especially the James River as it runs though Richmond—Elli Morris is a one-woman dynamo when it comes to promoting river recreation and stewardship in the minds of locals who otherwise might take it for granted. And with Richmond, Virginia gearing up to host the UCI Road World Championships in less than a month, the unprecedented opportunity for showing the James River to the world was a river promo dream come true.

Enter the Arts & Cultural District Micro Grant Program and a whole lotta community collaboration. Through a series of phone calls, texts and email messages, the team funneled Elli’s broad vision down to a single presentation concept. I assembled some rough mockups for the grant application, Elli made her case, and we all crossed our fingers.

Three days later, Elli called to say she had been awarded the grant. The project was a go!

The grant requirements added a third communications objective to the project: we needed to specifically promote the Arts & Culture District. Elli’s concept included a map to clearly demonstrate proximity, a series of her Elli Morris stills & motion photographs highlighting the myriad of activities taking place on the water just a few blocks down the hill, and a different title slogan about environmental impact on river water quality for each image. All we needed was a direct reference to the ACD and a tagline to tie it all together.

Richmond is a river city sitting on the fall line between the Shenandoah Mountain and the Atlantic ocean. As with any river city, the river and the city share a symbiotic relationship. That relationship can, at times, be as hurtful as it is helpful. Pollutants and detritus carried by rainwater runoff is one of those times. From its perch atop the bluff on the north side of the river, the ACD directly impacts the river every time it rains.

We went with Drains to the James to strengthen the cognitive link between the ACD and the river, and to carry the raindrop theme home. Plus, it’s just fun to say.

When all was said and done, we had ten 4×4 and two 2×2 foot raindrops static clinging to storefronts, along with two 4×4 foot vinyl banners flanking the main entrance to the downtown public library.

Not bad for six days’ work!

My primary contribution to the project was design and production, with a bit of copywriting help and editing thrown in. I also went around with Elli to wash windows and install posters—I was that excited to see them hanging! But there were a lot more people who helped make this happen.

Elli Morris of Elli Morris stills & motion, who did everything covered above plus riding her bike through town knocking on doors and collecting contact numbers from any and every place she hoped might host a poster. CultureWorks provided the with the Arts & Cultural District micro grant. The James River Association and Bike Walk RVA came on board. Richmond Signscapes printed and trimmed the signs in record time, Storefront for Community Design helped with locations. And all the people and places who welcomed the signs to their windows for the fall First Friday Art Crawl season: Bunkie Trinite Trophies, Hilton Garden Inn, Mama J’s Kitchen, Moore’s Auto Body & Paint Shop, Pediatric Dentistry, Richmond Public Library, The National, Candela Books & Gallery, Hummel Associates, Steen Wear bicycle apparel popup storefront, Richmond on Broad (University of Richmond) café, and a for-rent storefront at 208 E Broad.

bellafiore photography branding designed by shelli - applied usage overview

With a big marketing blitz in the works, Frank Bellafiore wanted to refresh his logo and add other brand elements to create a more fluid visual identity. A client whose logo I had just completed sang my praises to him and he got in touch.

His previous logo—script font on a terracotta background—was a sentimental nod to his Italian heritage. During our initial talks he expressed a strong desire to stay with this motif, but indicated he was open to other ideas. I presented three distinct concepts for review, including a take on the terracotta theme. Ultimately, Frank opted to go with a more modern look..

bellafiore photography branding designed by shelli - card frontThe final solution is a sophisticated combination of hand drawn script logo and badge elements paired with a classic sans-serif font. A subtle bokeh style brand backdrop pays homage to the creative use of light in photograpy while bringing visual weight to balance the delicate typography.

The bokeh configuration never changes, but can be cropped and positioned as necessary for various uses and to give a sense of motion. Rounded corners echo the circular nature of the light source. All brand elements are rendered in a sleek white and deep wine color combination. The logo and badge work equally well in wine on a light background, or reversed out of a photograph or the brand backdrop.

This one’s a personal project inspired by a font I ran across while researching type options for a client gig. You know us designer types … fonts are to die for ;-). I decided to revisit a Logo Design 101 exercise and develop a brand identity using only type. Not only was it a fun throwback activity, creating the medallion turned out to be a fairly thorough workout of my Illustrator skills.

Several evenings and a glass or two of chardonnay later, this charming collection of elements emerged. I wouldn’t try wrapping it around an accounting or law firm, but it’s darn near perfect for a design studio or boutique. Cupcakes also come to mind. (And no, it was not Cupcake chardonnay.)

yes, it’s for sale!

I hate to think of it languishing in my portfolio, never seeing the light of day. So I’m offering it up for purchase; name and color customizations included. The font family—Elsie (Regular and Swash Caps) by Argentinian duo Alejandro Inler and Ana Sanfelippo—is free and will be included. And of course, the branding package includes social media profile and header images. Hit me up to discuss pricing. 🙂

branding | three rivers fitness

studio shelli shelli Posted on June 5, 2015 by developerFebruary 4, 2017

When new owners Nick and Rachel took over a struggling fitness center their first move was to totally rebrand the business, name and all!

three rivers fitness branding design by shelli - logo, stacked version

The new name was a nod to the geographic location of Otsego, MN nestled among the Elk, Mississippi and Crow rivers just northwest of Minneapolis. It also presented the opportunity for a fresh, new approach to fitness center branding; one that reflected the surrounding natural environment, resonated with the greater community and welcomed fitness seekers of all ages and backgrounds. (This project also included a website reinforcing the river motif. The clients have since revised the site, adopting a more mainstream fitness center look and feel.)

Typography was kept simple and classic. Easy to read, but with a few quirks thrown in for a distinctive twist. Three separate combinations of the logo and word mark pairing provide maximum flexibility for use in branding everything from print and online marketing materials to apparel to outdoor or event signage.

Final brand elements included an interlocking wave pattern to convey motion and fluidity (flexibility) set against a circle of continuity. These graphical elements are used as stand alone identity marks and in conjunction with a word mark.

PROJECT: Elli Morris stills & motion brand website
CLIENT: Elli Morris of Elli Morris stills & motion
OBJECTIVES: Migrate HTML site to WordPress; completely redesign site to deliver high impact visuals in line with a new brand positioning strategy
MY ROLES: WordPress website design and development
ADDITIONAL CREDITS: This was a very collaborative project with significant client input

“No words.” She said. “I communicate with images, I don’t want any words.“

And so began an adventure of sorts where we explored the limits of what didn’t — and did — need to be said.

elli morris stills & motion website designed by shelliElli’s far out ideas directly contradicted nearly every aspect of conventional web design, but Elli isn’t a conventional client.

For starters we’re friends; and we’d worked together before. I’d noticed a blue Subaru topped by an orange kayak parked around the corner from my house. Ooooh, another kayaker in the hood. Being always eager to meet fellow water peeps, my fingers crossed that I’d run into the owner. And, sure ’nuff, I did.

At the time she was doing commercial photography and finishing up her self-published book, Cooling the South. She called me in to help maintain the existing book/book tour website while she was on the road. After that we collaborated on a pro bono website project promoting Chesterfield County Outdoor Programs.

Since then, Elli has made a name for herself as a bold, edgy portrait and action photographer and award-winning documentary film maker. It was time to completely reinvent her website to reflect that passion for pushing the envelope — she wanted to break all the rules, no holds barred. How often does a designer get asked to do that … by a client who means it!?!!

I am one lucky gal.

There was a lot of trial, testing and error. Beta users graciously provided feedback about how it felt to navigate a completely unfamiliar model. Adjustments were made and unmade … and a couple of times we almost lost our nerve. But with all said and done, there are only 25 distinct words throughout the portfolio section of her site — and six of them make up the titles of her book and award-winning documentary film.

The website, quite literally, speaks for itself.
