bellafiore photography branding designed by shelli - applied usage overview

With a big marketing blitz in the works, Frank Bellafiore wanted to refresh his logo and add other brand elements to create a more fluid visual identity. A client whose logo I had just completed sang my praises to him and he got in touch.

His previous logo—script font on a terracotta background—was a sentimental nod to his Italian heritage. During our initial talks he expressed a strong desire to stay with this motif, but indicated he was open to other ideas. I presented three distinct concepts for review, including a take on the terracotta theme. Ultimately, Frank opted to go with a more modern look..

The bokeh configuration never changes, but can be cropped and positioned as necessary for various uses and to give a sense of motion. Rounded corners echo the circular nature of the light source. All brand elements are rendered in a sleek white and deep wine color combination. The logo and badge work equally well in wine on a light background, or reversed out of a photograph or the brand backdrop.

This one’s a personal project inspired by a font I ran across while researching type options for a client gig. You know us designer types … fonts are to die for ;-). I decided to revisit a Logo Design 101 exercise and develop a brand identity using only type. Not only was it a fun throwback activity, creating the medallion turned out to be a fairly thorough workout of my Illustrator skills.

Several evenings and a glass or two of chardonnay later, this charming collection of elements emerged. I wouldn’t try wrapping it around an accounting or law firm, but it’s darn near perfect for a design studio or boutique. Cupcakes also come to mind. (And no, it was not Cupcake chardonnay.)

yes, it’s for sale!

I hate to think of it languishing in my portfolio, never seeing the light of day. So I’m offering it up for purchase; name and color customizations included. The font family—Elsie (Regular and Swash Caps) by Argentinian duo Alejandro Inler and Ana Sanfelippo—is free and will be included. And of course, the branding package includes social media profile and header images. Hit me up to discuss pricing. 🙂

branding | three rivers fitness

When new owners Nick and Rachel took over a struggling fitness center their first move was to totally rebrand the business, name and all!

three rivers fitness branding design by shelli - logo, stacked version

The new name was a nod to the geographic location of Otsego, MN nestled among the Elk, Mississippi and Crow rivers just northwest of Minneapolis. It also presented the opportunity for a fresh, new approach to fitness center branding; one that reflected the surrounding natural environment, resonated with the greater community and welcomed fitness seekers of all ages and backgrounds. (This project also included a website reinforcing the river motif. The clients have since revised the site, adopting a more mainstream fitness center look and feel.)

Typography was kept simple and classic. Easy to read, but with a few quirks thrown in for a distinctive twist. Three separate combinations of the logo and word mark pairing provide maximum flexibility for use in branding everything from print and online marketing materials to apparel to outdoor or event signage.

Final brand elements included an interlocking wave pattern to convey motion and fluidity (flexibility) set against a circle of continuity. These graphical elements are used as stand alone identity marks and in conjunction with a word mark.

branding + wordpress | affair with the james

affair with the james branding and website designed by shelli - screen displays

PROJECT: Affair with the James documentary video branding and website
CLIENT: Elli Morris stills & motion
OBJECTIVES: Frame the river as intimately integral to a variety of everyday recreational, spiritual and work activities; promote client documentary video; promote river activities and stewardship
MY ROLES: Brand Identity development, WordPress website design and development
ADDITIONAL CREDITS: Videography and photography, Elli Morris/Elli Morris stills & motion; Video editing and production, Elli Morris

It all started with the snake river. Well, actually, it all started with a phone call from Elli …

website designed by shelli

“I’m making a documentary about the James River. Recording one video each week of life on the James river for one year — birthday to birthday. I’m halfway through and I think I should have a website. Are you interested?”

Am I interested!?!

She wanted a map of the river with waypoints marking each video location, and a bit of a romantic touch. Ideas manifested themselves immediately. I just needed to know her up- and downriver endpoints.

“I’ll send you a map.”

The map was not at all what I expected. Not. At. All. When you are at — or in my case kayaking on — the river, it appears pretty much linear. There are the obvious exceptions such as oxbows and meanders, but for the most part it’s pretty much point A to point B with maybe a slight wobble or sweeping bend. But this, this was … Elli called it the snakeriver.

I called it a layout nightmare opportunity and ran with it. The project included branding, a website, video titles and printed promotional materials. And by the time all was said and done, that ol’ snake river and I were having an affair of our own. 🙂

daylab logo designed by shelli

PROJECT: Daylab rebranding
CLIENT: Daylab

I love Daylab products and approached them about rebranding and redoing their website. They were interested in the idea and wanted to see what I came up with. They loved the logo and my proposal but ultimately, as a small company with minimal staff, did not have the time resources to devote to a project that large. I still love daylab. 🙂

logo + display ad | venice kayak

studio shelli shelli Posted on April 24, 2015 by developerFebruary 4, 2017

logo designed by shelli

I met René through a kayaking website. He was leaving Denmark to launch a kayak business in Venice, Italy. I own a kayak and had lived in Venice. Be still my beating heart!

A few years later he enlisted me to create a small magazine display ad. When I saw the logo it was immediately clear that — though the concept was sound — the execution needed some polishing up. The redesign uses color and line weight to anchor the contour lines of the original. Strong light and dark areas give the composition more depth and a stronger presence.

This “micro-project” combined two of my favorite things: kayaking and Venice. If the idea of kayaking the canals of Venice suits your fancy, check out René’s website, Venice Kayak. (opens in new window)
